Victoria Day Frivolities

I love all things Victoria: the city, the magazine, the Beckham, and the Queen.

The Queen always has the most marvellous birthday. Most Ontarians seem to happily head for the cottage, but after 20 years of the up north thing I love not cottaging (behave, you ribald Brits...)  Instead, I did a number of fun things this week including a little road trip...

Love a little denim dress for travel. And my Longchamps travel bag...

Lovely tasting board at Taps, Niagara Falls

I've not been to Niagara Falls in a dog's age.

Hey!

It's quite pretty, particularly in May when it's off season. The weather cooperated and it was warm and sunny for our little getaway.

I felt very lucky:

I was sans kids this weekend and so Sunday I went to the local Chanel counter to get some new makeup:

I picked up the Perfection Lumière Velvet foundation in Beige Rose. What a lovely makeup. So light and matte. Perfect for summer. I also picked up some powder and a lip pencil and a Mademoiselle lippy. How could I not have had this colour in my collection? So pretty!

I needed to take my hair a couple of shades darker and did so sitting beside a professional dominatrix. In Oakville! Will wonders never cease? The lowlights made the old colour brighter, which I liked.

We popped by a friend's pool opening party.

Love that the GLK has a built-in Pimm's Holder (fear not, it's sealed!)

I decided to try planting a vegetable garden for the first time ever. Why has no one ever told me what a fantastic workout gardening is? My legs feel like I did an 8-hour Barre class!

We had some friends who were at the party where we first met over for a drink and some nibbles.

First mover advantage gets you Black Forest Bakery macarons and the fancy cheese plate.

I watched a little Mystic Pizza.

And had a little brunch at the Dundas Street Grille with a pal.

I tried the fedora look for an Oakville meets Coachella vibe. Oakchella?

Hope you had a happy Vicky Day or are preparing for a lovely Memorial Day or Bank Holiday.

  1. I love your selfies!!! They all look like they are a still from a french movie.

The black outfits are particularly killer.

I need to get myself over to the falls as i have a thing for water.

I tried growing lettuce once and it was nice but didn't get me to grow it twice...

  2. Well you certainly have been busy. Gardening is great for you butt and thighs...all that squatting. I have already harvested my lettuce and have flowers on my tomatoes. Have no idea what is okra versus a weed yet so that part of the bed is well a bit weedy. Glad you were able to get away without the kids for a day or two. We called them love weekends and were a sanity saver.

    1. I'm hoping that if my gardening efforts do not yield a great crop, I will at least have terrific gams. I'm not sure if okra would work here as it's so bleeding cold but it is nice in soups and stews. Love weekend is a perfect term!

  3. well done! Love all of this! Am hoping to plant the potager this weekend! And love Niagara Falls - so kitschy in the best way possible, with the cherry on the top being the actual falls!

we had a quite weekend - one dinner party. Too rainy for gardening and had to go out of town for a funeral. But everything is greening up nicely!

    1. Niagara Falls is fun. I've done the sedate Niagara-on-the-Lake thing for a long time so it was a fun change. Sorry to hear you were at a funeral. Hope the gardening efforts are progressing.

  4. Love both your black trouser outfits, those boots are hot! Yes to the Coachella, another mother and I were plotting how we would take our daughter later on (and spy on them) but do the deluxe version where you get a nice seat at the front and not have to use the public loos. Yes, I'm a wuss.

    1. Forgot to say I actioned the ass. (husband on gardening leave ) to put you on my sidebar of faves, must look and see if he's doing as told. Just re-read this and saw Mystic Pizza, one of my all time loves

    2. Thanks lovely! I would love to do Coachella. My hairdresser went and I was so jealous. Ditto for Burning Man although I'm rubbish in the sun. Yes, private loos are a must. I'd have to go for the celebrity/tech billionaire package for the festival scene too. And thank you for the sidebar! Mystic Pizza is fantastic, isn't it!

    3. We have thought and thought about Burning Man ( I love the sun!!!) but never get around to doing the Rv necessary. I won't be doing the traditional BM topless bike ride though, way too old and unfirm for that.

  5. Looks like a fabulous weekend for you. Well done! I agree about your selfie's. They're fabulous.
I am in desperate need of some new cosmetic retail therapy, I'll check that foundation out! You do look fabulous in black darling. Love the fedora on you. Planning to see my cutie pie next weekend, otherwise nothing fancy. What shade lipstick did you get, or did I miss something? I can admit to a black thumb, but am forced to garden occasionally and it is hard work!!
A real dominatrix? How tantalizing, do tell!! My salon is pretty boring. Perhaps I need a change :))

    1. Thanks. The lipstick is Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Creme in Mademoiselle (05). It's a nice neutral. The dom was fascinating, barking criticisms when she came in and even demanding an apology from a staffer. Then she started to dole out crumbs of praise until they were eating from her palm: I see why she is fully booked!

      Enjoy your cutie pie!

  7. Oakchella indeed!...now back to this "professional dominatrix"...I am quite intrigued! Was she in guard dog collar, leather bustier, 6 inch tungsten stillettos, and swishing a riding crop to and fro giving you girls a demo?

    1. She was not very dominatrixy. No crop, no CFM red-soled boots. I believe she was wearing a pair of Converse All-Stars. Her power was entirely in her attitude.

    2. Jen, I'd have her calling me 'Daddy' in under an hour.

  8. Looks like you had a fabulous time. I'm a little envious.

I recently did a big makeup splurge too. Do you think we can blame it on the weather? "Hurray, it's finally spring! I'll celebrate by spending too much money on lipstick and eyeliner!" ? Maybe? Regardless, I'm glad you've been having such fun. :)

  10. Hi Jen, I love that picture of Niagra Falls .. wow, pretty spectacular! Looks like a very nice make up hall;)
Funny about the professional dominatrix comment ~ they always seem to dress in black. Perhaps it's that styling hair is a sexy profession? Hope you are enjoying your weekend!

  11. Look at you! Girl next door to glam mystery woman all at once.

The closest I got to Canada was looking across Niagara Falls once a long, long time ago. Love Mystic Pizza, one of my favorite movies ever.

How does one recognize a professional dominatrix or is it one of those don't worry, you won't miss things?

  12. Love your humor, love the lowlights and what a fun 'crawl' you had visiting a number of cool places. Love? Nice! The chanel sounds gorgeous-I'm needing to give it a try. My armani is a bit too light. Happy weekend darling!

Weekend looks lovely. I went to Niagara Falls as a young teen with my parents. It was pouring with rain and I was entirely unimpressed. Your breakfast looks fab though. And I love that denim dress!
